Rain, heat and dust: designing a Bengaluru home for the way the city feels

Comfort is designed into the section, the openings and the drainage—not added later with more equipment.

Bengaluru’s weather is one of its pleasures, but a home still has to handle hard rain, bright afternoons, dusty roads and changing humidity. The best responses are often quiet: an overhang where it matters, an opening positioned for air, a drain that is accessible and an entrance that gives people a moment to arrive dry.

Shade is an architectural material

Use roof projections, balconies, recessed windows, screens and planting to control direct sun. The goal is not to eliminate daylight—it is to make daylight usable. A shaded window can be open more often, and a shaded exterior wall is easier to live with over time.

Give rainwater a complete route

Water should move from roof to gutter or drain, through a maintainable path and away from the building in a way that does not create a new problem. Terrace slopes, balcony thresholds, rainwater pipes and external levels need to be coordinated early. The prettiest detail on a façade is not helpful if water sits behind it.

Ventilation needs two sides

A room with a single large opening may be bright but not necessarily well ventilated. Cross-ventilation relies on a path: an inlet, an outlet and a layout that does not block the flow. Courtyards, stairwells and high-level openings can help when they are designed as part of the whole house.

Choose exterior materials with context

Brick, plaster, stone, metal and paint all weather differently. Think about the wall’s exposure, ledges that collect dust, cleaning access, rain splash and the maintenance cycle. The durable choice is one whose detail matches the material.

Ask for one section drawing: a cut through the façade, roof edge, window and drain explains comfort and weather protection better than a polished elevation ever can.
