Aluminium, uPVC or wood windows: a Bengaluru homeowner’s guide
Choose a window as a whole system—frame, glass, seal, sill, hardware and installation—not as a material label alone.
Windows influence daylight, rain protection, noise, ventilation, maintenance and the way a house looks from inside. Aluminium, uPVC and wood can each be appropriate. A good decision starts with the opening, exposure and performance requirement, rather than a one-word preference.
Aluminium: slim profiles and robust detailing
Aluminium systems are widely used and can offer clean sightlines and durable profiles. Their real performance depends on the section, glazing, gaskets, hardware, drainage channels and installation. For exposed façades, ask how water is collected and drained within the system.
uPVC: consistency and thermal comfort
uPVC profiles can offer useful thermal and acoustic performance when a good system is selected and installed accurately. Check reinforcement where required, compatible hardware, glass specification, mesh, drainage and the quality of the frame-to-wall seal. A poor installation can undermine any frame material.
Wood: warmth with a maintenance commitment
Wood can be beautiful in protected locations, but it needs the right species, joinery, coating system and maintenance plan. Exposure to sun and rain, sill detailing and periodic refinishing should be discussed openly before it is selected for large exterior openings.
Build a window schedule
- Opening size, orientation and room use.
- Frame system, glass and mosquito mesh.
- Hardware, safety restrictors and child-safe requirements.
- Sill, flashing, sealant and external drainage detail.
- Ventilation strategy and cleaning access.
